Great Coaching Behaviours - Part III

7. Patience and Persistence: Trusting the Process

Coaches understand that growth is a journey, not a sprint.

Tolerance for Setbacks: Encouraging phrases like, “Progress isn’t linear, and setbacks are part of learning,” reassure coachees during tough times.

Commitment to Development: Coaches stay consistent, even if progress is slow, reinforcing belief in the coachee’s potential.

Encouraging Perseverance: By celebrating small wins, coaches motivate clients to continue despite challenges.

8. Encouraging Self-Awareness: Unlocking Inner Potential

Self-awareness is the cornerstone of personal growth.

Guiding Reflection: Coaches might ask, “What patterns do you notice in your responses to stress?” to provoke thought.

Using Tools for Insight: Suggesting journals, 360-degree feedback, or self-assessments enables deeper understanding.

Exploring Values and Beliefs: A coach could ask, “How does this decision align with your core values?” to ensure authenticity.

9. Non-Directive Guidance: Empowering Autonomy

Coaches act as facilitators, not problem solvers.

Avoiding Imposition: Instead of saying, “You should try X,” a coach might ask, “What approach feels right for you?”

Encouraging Ownership: Coaches emphasize, “It’s your choice, and I’ll support whichever path you decide.”

Facilitating Growth: By guiding rather than leading, coaches ensure that clients own their decisions and learn from the process.

10. Building Accountability: Turning Intentions into Results

Accountability bridges the gap between goals and outcomes.

Setting Realistic Commitments: Coaches work with coachees to define actionable steps, like, “By next session, draft a plan for your next project.”

Following Up on Actions: Asking, “How did you apply what we discussed last time?” reinforces accountability.

Maintaining Momentum: Celebrating progress while addressing roadblocks ensures sustained effort.
