The Elevator Pitch: How to Make a Lasting Impression in One Minute

Imagine this: you’re on your way to meet a potential client—or as I like to call them, a future customer. You receive a warm welcome at the reception and enjoy a great cup of coffee. Just what you need to be razor-sharp and fully focused.

After a short wait, the receptionist informs you that you can head to the second floor to meet the person you have an appointment with.

As you step into the elevator, you notice someone already inside. He smiles and says, "You must be new to the company."

You quickly correct him, explaining that you’re here for a meeting with Mr. X. Interested, he asks, "Which company are you with?"

The moment you mention your company’s name, he immediately follows up: "What is your area of expertise?"

And then it happens: your brain starts searching for the right words. You try to clearly explain what your company stands for, but the elevator moves fast... and after just ten seconds, the man steps out. You’ve barely managed to share a small part of your answer.

Frustration kicks in. And it only grows when, upon reaching the second floor, your contact person tells you: "Did you know that the man in the elevator is our CEO?"

At that moment, you realize just how crucial it is to articulate who you are and what your company does in a clear, concise, and compelling way—within one minute.
